「ネイティブスピーカーにグッと近づく本」デイビッド・セインさん著
Great books for English learners.
I received Mr. David A. Thayne’s books;“Getting Close To Native Speakers English”and “English Native Speakers Use and Don’t Use”(I just made up the titles for the two books so they are not official.)
Speaking of Thayne-san, he is a popular book author whose books have sold more than two million total copies.
デイビッド・セインさんの著書「ネイティブスピーカーにグッと近づく本」と「ネイティブが使う英語 使わない英語」(アスコム刊)をお送りいただきました!
セインさんといえば、累計200万部を売るベストセラー本たちの著者。
「mini版ネイティブが使う英語使わない英語」
This time I read through “ native speaker~.” The book is……I’d say it’s like a back-scratching stick. You can scratch wherever you can’t scratch by yourself when you feel itchy and it makes you feel happy. Those expressions in the book are exactly what Japanese want to and should know.
今回の「ネイティブスピーカーにグッと~」を拝見して、まるで孫の手。「そこそこ、かゆいけど自分では手が届かない~」というところを掻いてくれる感じで、読んでムズムズがおさまって、スーッとしました。
日本人英語表現のかゆいところに手が届く本を書いてくださる方ですね。
mini版ネイティブスピーカーにグッと近づく英語 (アスコムmini bookシリーズ)
For example, When somebody asks you “Is this book yours?” Japanese tend to answer “No, it’s not.” However, it should be,…
I don’t believe it is. (そうでないように思いますが)
I don’t think so.(違うと思います)。
Those phrases are in the order of something like from very polite to rude…It’s a very convenient part for Japanese.
たとえば、Is this book yours?(この本はあなたのですか?)に、No,it’s not.なんて言ってしまいがち。でも、ネイティブ風に言うならば……
I don’t believe it is. (そうでないように思いますが)
I don’t think so.(違うと思います)。
こうしたフレーズが、丁寧から失礼、といった風にそれぞれ順番に並んでいて、日本人にはとても役立ち立ちます!
When I was talking with Asian friends of mine, they said “When you ask an American directions, some Americans say “I believe~.” When I heard that, I felt like asking “Are you sure?”
This is, however, the American way of saying things. Even English native speakers try to say things in a nice and gentle way.
アメリカでアジア人同士で話していたときに「アメリカ人に、道を聞くと I believe~とか言われて、『そう信じている』って、確かじゃないんかい!って思うよね~」なんて話したことがあります。でもね、これこそが、ネイティブ感覚。英語ネイティブでも、円滑なコミュニケーションを図るために断定的な言い方を避け、柔らかな物腰の表現を用いているわけですね。
Well, you can find many expressions with which you’ll be impressed, which will make you say “Oh I see,” “Oh I’m lucky to know that….”and so on. Even if you are not an English learner, it’s fun to see how Japanese words are expressed in English.
う~んとうなる内容、ほぅなるほど、知ってよかった……と。英語に興味がなくても、「この日本語が英語ではこうなのか」と知るだけでも、おもしろい英語本でした。オススメ!

あ、いいですね、この本!
わたしはいつも「そうは言わない」と
旦那にダメだしされることが多いので
必要かもです^^;
I believe~ってあまり使ってなかったです。
ちょっと意識して使ってみよう!
ひよこさん
ほんと、「ネイティブスピーカーにグッと近づく本」いいですよ!
言い方の程度って、日本人には難しいので、
丁寧~失礼とか、程度順に同じことを表現できるフレーズが6つくらいずつ並ぶんです。
ひよこさんは、心強いネイティブの旦那様がついてるから大丈夫でしょうけど、細かいニュアンスわかっていい本でした^^。
