The Japan Earthquake~as a evacuee

I’m usually in Tokyo or Sendai……I was writing an article at a building next to Sendai-station on the 9th floor as usual at the moment the Japan earthquake occurred.

It started from a small shake and finally, the building made heavy shaking sounds as if it was roaring and I was slipping on the floor even as I prostrated myself under the desk and held its leg. Things were falling from the desk and many bottles were scattered and cracked on the floor having fallen from the shelf. Women’s screams echoed in the building.

During the earthquake, I was thinking about my daughter who was in nursery at the moment of the quake. The fallen building under the huge earthquake in New Zealand also drifted through my mind. After the violent shaking had finished, I was told that I should evacuate to the closest park, but I just ran through the city and went to the park where my daughter should be.

There were many glass panes and walls falling off from buildings and I saw some parts of the pedestrian bridge had fallen out on my way to the park. When I found her, I just tore and said thank you to the teachers who protected her.

I had experienced a Japanese earthquake of a scale of 6 before, but this one was so much bigger and longer than that one. My house wall fell and cracked, things were scattered on the floor and furniture had fallen. My family members are safe, however, and our house building itself remained.

The damage we got was so much smaller than other victims and evacuees. Even my neighbors stayed in an elementary school, close to our houses, as an evacuee. Thank god and I’m terribly sorry for those people.

Here are some pictures from the place I was, when the earthquake happened and on the way back home.

So many people in the Tohoku area are still looking for their families and suffering from a lack of food, water, medicine and so many other things you need to survive. This is especially true in the area where the Tsunami hit.

I sincerely pray for the victims and I will make efforts to recover the city myself.

My daughter didn’t wear her jacket and socks when she evacuated from the nursery and someone I didn’t know, gave us a huge bath towel, with which I wrapped and protected her from the sudden snowstorm that started after the earthquake. I was struggling at the moment, however, the way she was makes me laugh now…

I stayed in Sendai after the earthquake, however, because of the lack of food and things, pollution and strong aftershocks, I made a heart-breaking decision to separate from family and evacuated to the Kanto-area with my daughter.

You know what? Very easy but sincere words from your loved ones are so much more precious and touching than tactful words and music from celebrities. ~The Japan earthquake.

    Ueno Yoko
