This is the first time to eat Hoya, Ascidians, in this season. Usually hoya live in shallow water with a salinity over 2.5%. The texture and the taste is like a seashell with a somewhat strong taste. Some people don’t like it because of the taste, but once you become to like it, you’ll really be into it.Actually I’m one of them.
Cut the outside shell with a knife. I like eating it with Ponzu. It’s only 100yen at the supermarket in Sendai. Hoya looks somewhat like a pineapple, so that is why it is called ‘pineapple in the sea.’

今年初物のホヤ。ホヤは海水の浅瀬に住む生き物（サンゴの一種かな？）。歯触りや味は貝みたいながら、ちょっとクセあり。その味を受け付けないという人もいるものの、ひとたび好きになるとクセになってしまうのです。私もそのひとりでした。
外側の殻をナイフでカットして、ポン酢でいただきます。ひとつ１００円。見た目がパイナップルみたいなところから「海のパイナップル」なんて呼ばれます。

よく食べます。
バーべキューの時は
塩コショウで焼いて食べたりもします。
結構いけますよ。
